Marriage in Islam is a sacred covenant (Mithaqan Ghaliẓa) established by Allah (SWT). It is built upon love (Mawaddah), mercy (Raḥmah), trust, and mutual respect. Every husband and wife should safeguard this noble relationship from anything or anyone that seeks to weaken or destroy it.
Never allow relatives, friends, colleagues, or neighbors to come between you and your spouse. While Islam commands us to maintain good relations with family and treat people kindly, no one should be given the opportunity to create hatred, suspicion, or resentment between husband and wife.
Avoid building close relationships with people who constantly insult, ridicule, or dishonor your spouse. Such individuals are not strengthening your marriage; rather, they gradually sow the seeds of discord and division. Your spouse deserves your honor, loyalty, and protection because Allah has made the two of you garments for one another.
Allah says:
"They are clothing for you, and you are clothing for them."
(Qur'an 2:187)
This beautiful verse reminds us that husband and wife are meant to protect, comfort, and support one another.
Anyone who truly loves and respects you will also respect your spouse. They will never encourage you to despise your husband or wife, expose their faults, or break your home. Instead, they will advise reconciliation, patience, forgiveness, and understanding whenever disagreements arise.
Be cautious of those who frequently bring negative reports or gossip about your spouse. Backbiting, slander, and rumors are among the greatest causes of broken homes. If someone begins speaking ill of your spouse, stop the conversation politely but firmly. Verify information before believing it, and never allow outsiders to influence your judgment against your life partner.
Protect your spouse's dignity both in public and in private. Never embarrass, mock, or expose your spouse's weaknesses before others. Defend one another's reputation, speak well of each other, and remember that every marriage experiences trials. The strongest couples are those who face challenges together instead of allowing outsiders to widen the gap between them.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
"The best of you are those who are best to their wives, and I am the best of you to my wives."
(Jāmiʿ at-Tirmidhī)
Remember that Shayṭān's greatest objective is to separate husband and wife. Resist every whisper that promotes hatred, suspicion, pride, unnecessary interference, or division. Strengthen your marriage through sincere communication, patience, wisdom, forgiveness, and the fear of Allah.
What Allah (SWT) has joined together, let no one strive to separate.
May Allah (SWT) strengthen the bond between every husband and wife, fill our homes with love, mercy, tranquility, understanding, and barakah, protect our marriages from every evil influence, and make our families among those who are successful in this world and the Hereafter.
